Glossary

A glossary of Japanese terms used in Return of Jetman that do not commonly appear in Western languages. PLEASE NOTE : Certain specialized terms (such as monster names or mecha attacks) and lengthier pieces of dialogue (such as "Wild" Bill Jackson's Japanese or Jeff Kensaki's song) are covered in the Notes for the Episode in which they appear.

Arranged alphabetically according to the English system.

  • abaiyo = an informal farewell, akin to "See ya" or "Hasta la vista"
  • akachochin = informal street bar, marked by the red paper lanterns that give it its name
  • bakudan (爆弾) = "bomb"
  • banzai = a cheer or battlecry (literally means "ten thousand years" or "long life")
  • -chan = a title ("honorific") usually used when referring to children, young girls, or someone the speaker finds very cute
  • chikushô! = an interjection equivalent to "damn!" or stronger
  • chojin [1] (鳥人) = "birdman" ; [2] (超神) = "super god"
  • dengeki (電撃) = "blitzkrieg"/"lightning war"
  • gaijin = "foreigner"
  • gattai (合体) = "combine"
  • ginga (銀河) = "galaxy"
  • hakaijin (破壊神) = "destruction god"
  • henka (変化) = "change"
  • henshin (変身) = "transform(ation)"
  • hiragana = Japanese phonetic writing system for native words
  • jinzo ningen (人造人間) = "artificial human"
  • kage (影) = "shadow"
  • kaijin (怪人) = "mutant", "monster" (human-sized)
  • kaizo ningen (改造人間) = "reconstructed human"
  • kamikaze = "divine wind" (recalling the Japanese suicide pilots of WWII)
  • keibi (警備) = "guard"
  • kendo = "the way of the sword" (Japanese style fencing)
  • kenjo (堅城) = "strong fortress"
  • "kôi!" = "action"
  • -kun = an informal honorific primarily referring to males
  • kurokaze (黒風)= "dark wind"/"black wind"
  • obachan = "auntie" (term of endearment for a middle-aged woman)
  • osore (恐れ) = "fear", "terror", "horror"
  • owari = "the end"
  • sake = rice wine
  • -sama = an honorific denoting much higher rank than the speaker - can be translated as "lord"
  • -san = an honorific meaning the equivalent of "Mr.", "Mrs.", "Miss", "Ms."
  • sayonara = "farewell"
  • senshi (戦士) = "warrior"
  • sentai (戦隊) = "task force"
  • seppuku = ritual suicide
  • shuriken (手裏剣) = throwing stars
  • "shôbu da" = "a contest", "match"
  • shojo (少女) = "young girl"
  • tanjo (誕生) = "birth", "(is) born"
  • tasukete = "Help me!"
  • "Yatta!" = "All right!"
  • yen = Japanese currency
  • yumei [also yuumei] (有名) = "famous"
